Casting 101: Basic Lost-Wax Casting

Dates: Sundays, 26 March and 2 April 2023, from 10am-4pm

Description: Students will learn the basics of lost-wax casting, including spruing and investing wax patterns; casting, and finishing. We will start with a wax pattern from the Guild’s collection (or one of your own, with instructor approval) and end with one or two finished pieces of Argentium® Sterling silver jewelry. If you do not finish polishing your finished work by the end of the second session, you will be allowed one free Open Shop to do so.

Class fee: $300, payable by credit card or PayPal when you register (see below).

Materials fee: $40, payable with cash, check (made out to Eric Hoffman), Paypal, Venmo, Cashapp, or whatever gets the instructor his lunch money. Fees include 1 ozt. of Argentium® 935 Pro Silver Casting Grain, waxes, and investment. While casting your old silver scrap is certainly possible (and encouraged!), a certain amount of virgin silver is always suggested and therefore all students will be required to buy at least 1/2 ozt. of casting grain. Please let the instructor know at least two weeks in advance if you will only be purchasing 1/2 ozt of casting grain. Silver prices are subject to change due to market fluctuations. 

Requirements: Bring your own Optivisor if you have one, and something for taking notes (pen & paper, phone, clay tablet & stylus, whatever). Any wax or clay carving tools you have will also be helpful, but not necessary.

Your place will be reserved when you register and pay the fees.
Cancellation Policy:
Cancellations received by participants more than 10 days prior to the event will result in a full refund of class and materials fees, minus a $25 processing fee.

Cancellations received 10 or fewer days prior to the event will result in no refund, and the materials fee will still be due to the instructor within 10 days of the class's end (because any materials have already been ordered for the participant by this time).

Cancellations by the PLG or instructor will result in an opportunity to reschedule or a refund, as determined by the participant.
