Advanced Casting: Gold Karating & Casting Workshop

Date: Saturday, 14 September 2019, from 10am-4pm Gold Casting

Location: PLG workshop, 169 Defense Highway (lower level) Annapolis, MD.

Description: Given a basic knowledge of lost-wax casting in silver, and starting with invested wax patterns that you provide, you will learn the following about casting in gold:

  • Determine the amount of gold alloy needed for a given wax pattern using specific gravity

  • How to karat gold from pure 24K gold and a master alloy to the alloy of your choice

  • Upkarating and downkarating (e.g., start with 18K gold for a 14K final product)

  • Scrap re-use

  • Nickel and palladium white gold alloys

  • Quality marking requirements in the US

We’ll have time to fire up the kilns, go over the math & ratios, weigh out your gold, and cast up to two flasks each. With any luck you’ll have time to polish & finish your piece(s) as well, but the finishing techniques are the same as with silver, so you can also complete your piece on your own.

Note: Depending on availability, the pure gold we use may be gold that I have personally refined and/or that I have purchased from a jewelry supply house. You will be charged a fair market value in either event.

Class fee: $90, payable at the time of registration on the website.

Materials fee: Varies according to the weight and karat of your project(s). Payable by cash, check, or PayPal to the instructor on the day of class. I will determine your materials fee with the information you give me (see Requirements, below) when you register. After registration closes, I’ll let you know your materials fee total so you may bring your payment to class.

To help estimate your costs, as of early July, 14K gold (including nickel-based white) is $30.69/gram (g), 14K Pd white is 113.52/g, and 18K (non-Pd) is $93.96/g. Prices are subject to market fluctuations.

Requirements: When you register, you will be asked for the following information:

  • The wax weight of your sprued pattern(s)

  • What karat (10K, 14K, 18K, or 22K) and color (yellow, white, or rose) alloy you want

Also, note the following:

  • If you choose white gold, I will assume you want a traditional nickel (Ni) based alloy. Due to concerns about nickel sensitivities or other reasons, you may choose palladium (Pd) white gold instead, but that will also increase your materials cost (Pd is a Platinum Group Metal and the alloys cost several hundreds of dollars per troy ounce).

  • If you wish to cast two flasks (no more than two, please!), you can ask for two different alloys if you wish (e.g., “3.4g of 14K rose and 2.3g of 18K white”).

  • Bring the following to class: some kind of calculator (like your phone), your invested patterns (probably already at the shop by the time we begin), an Optivisor if you have one, and something for taking notes (pen & paper, phone, clay tablet & stylus, whatever).
