Here’s a list of the classes scheduled for July 2017. Please scroll down if you’d like to see the flyer containing details for a particular class. The fliers appear in the same order as the list.

July 1st – silver and salt water etching (Donna) – register by June 21st

July 8th – basic silversmithing – pendant (Donna) – register by June 25th

July 15th – cold connections and rivets (Donna) – register by July 5th

July 16th – fused fine silver chains (Donna) – register by July 5th

July 22nd – filigree earrings (Donna) – register by July 17th

Silver Etching and Salt Water Etching

Etching on Fine Silver

Dates: Saturday July 1st, 2017 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm (with a lunch break)

Location: PLG workshop, 169 Defense Highway (lower level) Annapolis, MD.

Description:   Students will make at least two etched project using Ferric Nitrate with .999 fine or sterling silver and copper with saltwater. The projects will focus on etches for future personal projects. Students may bring  personal tools if desired. Please contact the instructor with any questions.

Fees: Class fee $90.00, $110.00 non-member, payable in cash or by check to PLG.

Materials fee: paid to the instructor.

Option #1 – $105.00  both silver and copper Fine silver includes a 6″ x 2″ .999 fine silver sheet 20gauge, a pack of 4/0 saw blades and use of Ferric Nitrate and resists. ( Students will bring any findings for jewelry or contact instructor for an additional cost for findings to be included in your kit) –  Copper, battery set up, container,  resist pen and patina. (If you already have your etching set up and want to come, please contact the instructor.)

Option #2 –  $60.00 Fine silver kit is $60.00 and includes a 6″ x 2″ .999 fine silver sheet 20gauge, a pack of 4/0 saw blades and use of Ferric Nitrate and resists. ( Students will bring any findings for jewelry or contact instructor for an additional cost for findings to be included in your kit)

Option #3 $45.00 Copper only will include: copper, battery set up, container, resist pen and patina. (If you already have your etching set up and want to come, please contact the instructor.)

Beginning Silversmithing

Silversmithing: Stone Pendant with a Bezel

Dates: Saturday July 8th, 2017, 11:00 am to 5:00 pm
We will break for a quick snack.

Location: PLG workshop, 169 Defense Highway (lower level) Annapolis, MD.

Description:  No Silversmithing experience is required. This class is for beginners or a refresher for everyone, please be prepared to focus and work hard. Students will make 1 bezel set stone pendant with a bail.  Students will need to supply 1 small to  medium cabochon. Students may bring  personal tools if desired.  Cabochons may also be purchased at class – please contact the instructor with any questions.
Class fee:  $90.00 member cost, $110.00 non-member, payable in cash or by check to PLG.

Materials fee: paid to the instructor. Sterling silver kit is $39.00 which includes 2″ x 2″ sterling silver sheet 20gauge, 1 foot flat 1/8″ bezel wire and a pack of 3/0 saw blades. Contact the instructor for details if you would like to bring your own materials. Please note : material fees may fluctuate due to rising and lowering of silver costs at the time of ordering. Contact me if you want to work in copper.

Cold Connections and Rivets

Dates: Saturday July 15th, 2017 from 10:00 pm to 4:00 pm with a snack break

Location: PLG workshop, 169 Defense Highway (lower level) Annapolis, MD.

Description:  Silversmithing experience is not required. Students will lean rivets with wire and tube. Students will make projects of their choice using these skills such as rings, pendants, cuffs, beads or belt buckles. Students may bring  personal tools or materials if desired.

Fees: Class fee $90.00, $110.00 non-member, payable in cash or by check to PLG.

Materials fee:  Paid to the instructor

Option #1: $53.00 –  Sterling silver kit includes 6″ x 1.5″ 20 gauge sheet, 6″ round 12 gauge wire, 2″ silver tube and 4/0 saw blades.

Option #2: $68.00 –  Mixed metal kit includes  6″ x 1.5″ 20 gauge sheet in silver, copper and nu gold (jewelers brass), 6″ round 12 gauge wire in silver and copper, 2″ silver, copper and brass tube and 4/0 saw blades.

Option #3: $15.00 –  Copper and Nu Gold kit includes  6″ x 1.5″ 20 gauge sheet in copper and nu gold (jewelers brass), 6″ round 12 gauge wire in copper, 2″ copper and brass tube and 4/0 saw blades.

Fancy Chains

Fused Fine Silver Pinched Loop Chain

Date :  Sunday July 16th, 2017  from 10:00 am to 4:00pm (quick lunch break)

Location: PLG workshop, 169 Defense Highway (lower level) Annapolis, MD.

Description:  Pinched loop chains are versions of the single loop-n-loop chain. The name “Sailor Chain” has often been used for this chain because it looks like strong anchor chain. Students will make a chain of their choice using fusion but  may only complete a section of the chain. Students will be able to try more than one style and work on and finishing techniques. Students may bring their personal tools if desired. Some silversmithing experience is helpful but not required. This class is intensive, please be prepared to focus and work hard.

Note: There is no soldering in this class, all bonds will be made by fusing metal.

Fees: Class fee $90.00 members, $110.00 non-members, payable in cash or by check made out to the PLG.

Materials fee: $65.50 and include: 3 feet 14gauge .999 fine silver wire, 14 feet 20 gauge .999 fine silver wire, a large charcoal brick, 1/2″ dowel, saw blades and 2 scribes (Let the instructor know if you do not need any items listed or need to add needle nose pliers) Pliers will be available for student use without purchase.

Requirements: Students are encouraged to bring a notebook and an Optivisor if they own one.

Filigree Earrings

Silversmithing: Filigree Earrings

Dates:  Saturday July 22nd, 2017 From 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
We will break for a quick lunch. Bring lunch or buy nearby.

Location: PLG workshop, 169 Defense Highway (lower level in back) Annapolis, MD.

Description:  Some silversmithing experience is helpful but not required. This class is intensive, please be prepared to focus and work hard. Students will make 1 pair of filigree earrings as shown. Students may bring personal tools if desired. Please contact the instructor with any questions.

Fees: Class fee $90.00, $110.00 non-member, payable in cash or by check.

Materials fee: Silver kit is $23.00 which includes, Solder, 3 feet filigree wire, 1.5 foot 1mm (18 Gauge) round sterling silver wire, pair of ear wires, brush and a small charcoal block. Please contact the instructor for details if you would like to bring your own materials.

Create Your Own Metal Design Stamps

Dates:  Sunday July 23rd, 2017 From 10:00 am to 6:00 pm
We will break for lunch. Bring lunch or buy nearby.

Location: PLG workshop, 169 Defense Highway (lower level) Annapolis, MD.

Description:  Students will design and carve from steel blanks their own designs. Students will create at least 1 stamp, the design can be simple or complex. Students will also learn to temper the stamp so it can be used on any metal surface. Steel stamps may also be used on PMC projects.

Fees: Class fee $120.00, $140.00 non-member, payable in cash or by check to the PLG.

Materials fee:  Paid to the instructor. Your $35.00 kit will include steel blanks (you may choose the size and shape to fit your pattern), diamond files and diamond burs. Contact the instructor for details if you would like to bring your own materials. Please bring an optivisor or magnification if desired. We will have some for class use.

European 4-in-1 variations

Date:  Saturday, July 29th, 2017, from 1-5 PM

Location: Instructor’s home in Severn; directions provided upon registration.

Description: Learn the most famous chain maille pattern, invented for armor centuries ago, but now used for beautiful jewelry.

Class Fee: $60 member, $80 non-member, payable in cash or by check made out to the PLG.

Materials fee: Please note that the materials fees quoted below are based on my most recent perusal of the Urban Maille website. Prices may fluctuate. However, the more rings we order, the lower the price per ring, so you may end up paying less than the price below. Shipping costs will be divided evenly among the students. Sterling lobster clasps are $1.50, copper are $1.00.

Project 1:  (top photo above) medium gauge 3-row bracelet: 16g 5.0mm 100 rings:

Argentium sterling – $45.85 plus shipping; sterling – $40.74 plus shipping; copper – $16.08 plus shipping

Project 2: (bottom photo above) small gauge 3-row bracelet with beads: 18g 4.0mm 120 rings:

Argentium sterling – $27.85 plus shipping; sterling – $24.88 plus shipping; copper – $10.61 plus shipping

**note: students will need to provide their own 4mm beads, or specify what they want when registering.

Tools:  Two pairs of non-serrated jewelry pliers, such as straight chain-nose, flat-nose, or bent chain-nose. If you need to borrow tools for this class, please notify the instructor when registering.
