Here’s a list of the classes scheduled for June 2017. Please scroll down if you’d like to see the flyer containing details for a particular class. The fliers appear in the same order as the list.

3 June – Advanced silversmithing: cabochon and tube-set stone pendant – register by 24 May

Advanced Silversmithing: Pendants with Cabochon & Tube Set Stone

Dates: Saturday June 3rd, 2017 From 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
We will break for lunch. Bring lunch or buy nearby.

Location: PLG workshop, 169 Defense Highway (lower level) Annapolis, MD.

Description:  Some silversmithing experience is required. This class is intensive, please be prepared to focus and work hard. Students will make 1 pendant learning to work a cabochon and tube set facet stone and detailed construction. Students may bring personal tools if desired.  A choice of facet CZ or gemstone will be included, each student will choose 1 – please contact the instructor with any questions.

Fees: Class fee $120.00, $140.00 non-member, payable in cash or by check.

Materials fee: Paid to the instructor before class. Sterling silver kit is $45.00 which includes 2″ x 3″ silver sheet, 1 foot flat .999 fine silver 1/8″ bezel wire, saw blades,1″ tube and a facet 5mm CZ or gemstone. Students will supply their own cabochon or purchase at class for an extra cost. Please contact the instructor for details if you would like to bring your own materials. Materials are paid to the instructor at the beginning of class.

Please note : material fees may fluctuate due to rising and lowering of silver costs at the time of ordering.

Create Your Own Textured Metal

Dates:  Sunday June 4th, 2017 From 12:00 am to 4:00 pm
We will break for a quick snack.

Location: PLG workshop, 169 Defense Highway (lower level) Annapolis, MD.

Description:  Students will learn to make clear impressions on silver and copper with minimal distortion to the metal. We will use a variety of patterning media and embossing tools to create 1 and 2 sided prints. Opposite printing on 1 roll thru the mill for earring patterns. We will use paper, metal, organic and cut out templates to make clean usable textures for future jewelry projects.

Fees: Class fee $60.00, $80.00 non-member, payable in cash or by check to PLG.

Materials fee: paid to the instructor

Option #1: $58.00 kit will include 2 – 26 gauge copper sheets 6″ x 12″, 1 – 6″ x 1″ 28 gauge sterling silver, laser cut patterns, stencils, saw blades.

Option #2: $43.00 kit will include 2 – 26 gauge copper sheets 6″ x 12″, laser cut patterns, stencils, saw blades.

Option #3:$27.00 kit will include laser cut patterns, stencils, saw blades. Student supplies all metal in the correct gauge.

Link Bracelet with or without cabochons

Dates: Saturday and Sunday, June 10th and 11th, 2017 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
We will break for lunch

Location: PLG workshop, 169 Defense Highway (lower level) Annapolis, MD.

Description:  Silversmithing experience is required. This class is for students who have made a few projects soldering, please be prepared to focus and work hard. Students will make 1 Link Bracelet with your own design and style. Students will supply their own cabochons if desired. Cabochons may be purchased at class for extra cost.

Fees: Class fee $180.00, $200.00 non-member, payable to the PLG in cash or by check.

Materials fee: (Materials fee pay to the instructor)

Option #1: Silver kit is $59.00 and includes 6″ x 1 1/2″ 20 gauge sterling silver sheet, 2 feet 1/8″ bezel wire, silver swivel lobster claw, 1 package of #4/0saw blades and 2 feet 18 gauge round wire. (Suitable for cabochons or links without stones)

Option #2: Silver Hinge kit $83.00 and includes 6″ x 1 1/2″ 20 gauge sterling silver sheet, 2 feet 1/8″ bezel wire, silver swivel lobster claw, 1 package of #4/0saw blades, 2 feet 18 gauge round wire, 1 foot tube and 1 foot 11gauge wire for hinges. (Suitable for cabochons or links without stones)

 Option #3: Copper kit $20.00 and includes 6″ x 12″ 20 gauge copper sheet, 2 feet 1/8″ copper bezel wire, 1 package of #4/0saw blades, 2 feet 18 gauge copper round wire,

Option #4: Jewelers Brass kit $25.00 and includes 6″ x 12″ 20 gauge brass sheet, 2 feet 1/8″ brass bezel wire, 1 package of #4/0saw blades, 2 feet 18 gauge brass round wire.

Beginning Fold forming Ruffled Cuff with beads

Date:   Saturday June 24th, 2017 10:00 am to 4:00 pm (with a lunch break)

Location:. LG workshop, 169 Defense Highway (lower level) Annapolis, MD.

Description:  Students will make 1 bracelet with beads that they bring. Students may bring their personal tools if desired. Some silversmithing experience is helpful but not required. Please be prepared to focus, work hard and have fun. The images above are intended as a sample only – students will create their own designs.

Class Fees: $90.00 members or $110.00 non members, paid by check or cash to “PLG”

Materials fee: Paid to the instructor $10.00 for copper pre cut 24 gauge blank and wire. Students must provide beads for their bracelets.
Recommended hammer – Peddinghause Bordering Hammer -Rio #112401) Or any other narrow peen hammer.
You may bring additional copper of your own if desired.

Requirements: Students are encouraged to bring a notebook and an Optivisor if they own one

Post and Dangle Earrings

Date :  Sunday June 25th, 2017 , from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm (with a quick lunch break)

Location: PLG workshop, 169 Defense Highway (lower level) Annapolis, MD.

Description:  Students will learn 6 different styles of ear wires including kidney wires and will also learn to make your own posts and ear nuts. Students will complete one pair of  post earrings and one pair dangle earrings in silver and practice a variety of styles. Students will work on jeweler’s saw skills, solder and finishing techniques. Students may bring their personal tools if desired. This class is intensive, please be prepared to focus and work hard. The images above are intended as a sample only – students will create their own designs.

Fees: Class fee $90.00 members, $115.00 non-members, payable in cash or by check made out to the PLG.

Materials fee: $40.00 payable to the instructor. Materials will include: 22 gauge  silver sheet (3″ x 2″ each), 4 feet 20 gauge sterling silver round wire, solder, saw blades, patina and copper practice wire. (Materials fee paid to the instructor at the start of class)

Requirements: Students are encouraged to bring a notebook and an Optivisor if they own one.

Basic Faceting

 

Date: Sundays: June 25th & July 9th, from 10​ AM to 4 PM

Location: PLG workshop, 169 Defense Highway​ (lower level) Annapolis, MD.

Description: Each student will receive instruction​ on cutting a round gem (Standard Round Brilliant or Simple Jack) from synthetic garnet, to include preforming, dopping, cutting, and polishing. In the first class we will preform the stone, cut the pavilion (bottom), and transfer it to prepare it for the cutting of the crown (top). In the second session we will cut the crown.

Fees:

Class Fee: $160, payable in cash or by​  check made out to the Patuxent Lapidary Guild

Materials Fee: $10 for enough synthetic​  garnet for at least a single 10-20mm gem; payable in cash or by check made out to Eric

Hoffman. The garnet will be YAG (Yttrium Aluminum Garnet) or GGG (Gadolinium Gallium Garnet). Synthetic garnet is inexpensive, but increasingly hard to find, so I reserve the right to substitute materials, and possibly adjust the materials fee slightly.

I’ll have additional rough on hand (including more synthetics like garnet and sapphire, as well as optical quartz) if you would like to purchase additional materials.

Requirements:  Bring an optivisor and 10x loupe if you have one
