Here’s a list of the classes scheduled for February 2017. Please scroll down if you’d like to see the flyer containing details for a particular class. The fliers appear in the same order as the list.

Torch Fired Enameling

Date :  Saturday February 4th, 2017, from 10AM to 3PM (with a quick snack break that you bring)

Location: PLG workshop, 169 Defense Highway (lower level) Annapolis, MD.

Description:  Students will make projects on copper by torch firing enamel. Students will work on torch skills and finishing techniques. Students may bring their personal tools if desired. This class is intensive, please be prepared to focus and work hard. The image above is intended as a sample only – students will create their own designs on copper.

Fees: Class fee $75.00 members, $95.00 non-members, payable in cash or by check made out to the PLG.

Materials fee: $85.00, ($25.00 if you have your own enamels, brush and sifter pans) payable to the instructor. Materials will include: one kit (from below) sifter pans and copper blanks in an assortment and supplies,

one enamel kit:

#2615-1   Enamel Kit: Transparents – $55.00.      or
#2615-2   Enamel Kit: Opaques – $55.00.     

These kits are intended for beginners who would like to try using jewelry enamels. Each kit comes in a plastic box with .5 oz. of 11 colors of jewelry enamel, 1 oz. of Klyr-fire, a firing rack, a 3 point trivet, a medium size sifter, a fine point paint brush, a wet packing spoon, a wet packing scribe and directions. The transparent kit is best suited for enameling on silver and the opaque kit is best suited for enameling on copper.

The colors in the transparent kit are red, yellow, light blue, dark blue, green, purple, orange, black, clear (flux), pink and brown.

The colors in the opaque kit are red, yellow, blue, orange, green, purple, gray, brown, black, undercoat white and white

Requirements: Students are encouraged to bring a notebook and an Optivisor if they own one.

A minimum of 3 students is required for this class to run, and class size will be limited to 8 students.  Please sign up  BEFORE  January 25th so your materials can be ordered. Your place will be reserved when you contact the instructor and receive a reply.  If you miss the class or “no show” you will be obligated to purchase your kit.

Keum-Boo on .999 Fine Silver

(Bonding 24K gold to a finished silver surface)

Silversmithing: Application of 24K gold to PMC and fine silver

Dates: Sunday February 5th 2017, from 11:00am to 4:00pm
We will break for a quick snack you bring.

Location: PLG workshop, 169 Defense Highway (lower level) Annapolis, MD.

Description:  Keum-boo is an ancient Korean gilding technique used to apply thin sheets of gold to silver. Students will make earrings or pendants with .999 fine silver using this technique. Students may bring personal tools if desired.

Fees: Class fee $75.00, $95.00 non-member, payable in cash or by check.

Materials fee:  $51.50 which will include 1sq inch 23.5K gold Keum boo foil, 2″ x 3″ fine silver sheet 20 gauge, saw blades, 2 feet sterling 20 gauge round wire and use of patina (if desired)

Contact the instructor for details if you would like to bring your own materials. Please note : material fees may fluctuate due to rising and lowering of gold and silver costs at the time of ordering.

Basic Lost-Wax Casting

Dates​: February 5th and 19th, 2016, from 10-4 PM

Location​: PLG workshop, 169 Defense Highway (lower level) Annapolis, MD.

Description​: Students will learn the basics of lost-wax casting, including spruing and investing wax patterns; casting, and finishing. We will start with a pattern from the Guild’s extensive collection (or one of your own, with instructor approval) and end with one or two finished pieces of Argentium® Sterling silver jewelry.

Fees:

Class fee​: $180 for members, $200 for non-members; payable in cash or by check made out to the PLG.

Materials fee​: $30, payable in cash or by check made out to the instructor. Fees include 1 ozt. of Argentium® 935-Pro Silver Casting Grain, waxes, and investment. While casting your old silver scrap is certainly possible (and encouraged!), a certain amount of virgin silver is always suggested and therefore all students will be required to buy at least 1/2 ozt. of casting grain. Please let the instructor know at least two weeks in advance if you will only be purchasing 1/2 ozt of casting grain. ​Silver prices are subject to change due to market fluctuations.

Requirements​: Bring your own Optivisor if you have one. If not, bring your pulse. Any wax or clay carving tools will also be helpful. To register for this class​: Email the instructor, Eric Hoffman, at ​ephoffman@upcyclist.com​ at least two weeks in advance (by January 22nd) to allow ordering of materials. ​No deposit is necessary; fees are due at the start of the class. Class size will be limited to 6 students.​ ​Your place will be reserved when you receive a confirmation email from the instructor. Students who reserve a seat and do not show for class without prior notification to the instructor may be required to pay in advance for their next class.

Flush Mount Stone Ring Setting

Date:   Saturday February 11th 2017 , from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm (with a quick lunch break)

Location: PLG workshop, 169 Defense Highway (lower level) Annapolis, MD.

Description:  Students will make sample sheets to develop stone setting skills. We will make 1 copper ring and 1 silver ring (if option 2 materials is chosen) in this class. Students may bring their personal tools if desired. Some silversmithing experience is helpful but not required. This class is great for the beginner to learn a new skill or a refresher for all.

Fees: Class fee $90.00 members, $110.00 non-members, payable in cash or by check made out to the PLG.

Materials fee:

Option #1 $40.50 materials include: 10 CZ stones 3mm, steel rod burnisher, brass rod burnisher, bud bur, heart bur, stone setting vise (needed) and 14 gauge copper.

Option #2 $61.50 materials include: 10 CZ stones 3mm, steel rod burnisher, brass rod burnisher, bud bur, heart bur, stone setting vise (needed) 1″ x 4″ 18 gauge sterling silver and 14 gauge copper.

Please note: material fees may fluctuate due to rising and lowering of costs when ordering. Many of these tools come in packages of 3 or 6, you are only paying for 1 single unit of the packaged at a reduced price. YOU WILL NEED STRONG MAGNIFICATION FOR THIS CLASS.
