Here’s a list of the classes scheduled for January 2017. Please scroll down if you’d like to see the flyer containing details for a particular class. The fliers appear in the same order as the list.

13 AND 14 January – patinas – register by 10 January

Exploring Easy Patinas from Household items on Base Metals

Date :  Saturday and Sunday January 13th and 14th 2018 , from 1:00PM to 3:30PM both days.

Location: PLG workshop, 169 Defense Highway (lower level) Annapolis, MD.

Description:  Students will explore a variety of easy to make patina from household items and some torch patinas. The images above are intended as a sample patina only – students will only be testing patinas on base metals such as copper, bronze and brass. We will be fuming and using dry and liquid solutions from user friendly products found every day in your home and the torch. Colors range from rainbow colors to aqua and pink. No experience needed.

Fees: Class fee $75.00, $95.00 non-member, payable in cash or by check.

Materials fee: $25.00, payable to the instructor. Materials will include: solutions, containers and base metals. (Students may bring readymade personal pieces made of base metals to patina – please note the instructor or PLG will not be responsible for outcome of personal items) (Materials fee pay to the instructor)

Requirements: Students are encouraged to bring a notebook for recording results and note taking Bring an Optivisor if they own one.

A minimum of 3 students is required for this class to run, and class size will be limited to 10 students.  Please sign up  BEFORE  January 10th, so your materials can be ordered. Your place will be reserved when you contact the instructor and receive a reply.

Prongs, Turtles and Frogs

Date:     Saturday, January 20 2018 from 11-5 PM

Location: PLG workshop, 169 Defense Highway (lower level) Annapolis, MD.

Description: This class will explore the technique of capturing a cabochon or tumbled stone without the use of a bezel.  The student will cut out a back with or without legs attached.

Frogs:              metal back with legs attached and folded over the stone

Prongs:            metal back without legs.  Soldered wire prongs are used to attach stone.

Turtles:           A formed metal shape is soldered to the back to form a pocket.  Combined

with either wire prongs or attached legs the units capture the stone.

All three techniques will be demonstrated.  Student will work on two items.

Fees: Class fee: $90 ($115 for non-members), payable in cash or by check made out to the PLG.

Materials fee:  Students who wish to bring their own materials, must notify the instructor two weeks before the class.  Otherwise, materials fees should be paid to the instructor the day of the class.

Kits will include:

22 gauge sterling silver sheet- 2” x 3”

18 gauge sterling silver wire – 6”

22 gauge brass sheet – 2” x 3”

Pricing: Approximately $25  (this price is dependent on the cost of the materials at the time of order)

Please bring two cabochons no larger than a quarter.  If you need stones, they will be available at the class.  The stones will be individually priced.

Tools (most of these are available during the class from the instructor)

Please plan on bringing your own hand tools.  A complete list will be sent out with the syllabus as an acknowledgement of your enrollment.

Mokume Gane Ring – Sterling Silver and Copper

Date :  Saturday and Sunday January 27th and 28th 2018 , from 12 :00 pm to 5:00 pm both days.  We will have a quick snack break

Location: PLG workshop, 169 Defense Highway (lower level) Annapolis, MD.

Description:  Students will learn detailed Mokume’ Gane skills and make 1 ring with one of the patterns above. Projects will start from a pre-made billet of copper and sterling silver. Students will learn to create their own patterns using forging and rolling mill skills. This class is intensive, please be prepared to focus and work hard. The image above is intended as a sample only – students will create their own designs.

Fees: Class fee $250.00 members, $270.00 non-members, payable in cash, charge or by check made out to the PLG.

Materials fee: Paid to the instructor at the beginning of class.

Option #1: $103.50  and include 1 set ball burs saw blades, patina, snap mandrel with 15 discs and a sterling silver and copper billet 1/4″ x 1″

Option #2: $53.50 and include 1 set ball burs saw blades, patina, snap mandrel with 15 discs and a brass and copper billet 1/4″ x 1″

Requirements: Students are encouraged to bring a notebook and an Optivisor if they own one. Note: If you do not need a full kit please contact the instructor when registering.
